Record low number of burglaries in 2019 – but Danes' burglary protection can be improved
Every year, thousands of Danes experience burglaries in their private homes and businesses. In 2019, the police received no less than 24,553 reports of burglaries in private homes. However, this is a significant decrease compared to previous years. But the curve needs to go even further down!
Still a large number of burglaries in Denmark
The number of burglaries in private homes is relatively high in Denmark. However, 2019 has been a record low compared to previous years and we have experienced a decrease of 14.6% compared to the year before. So it is going in the right direction, but the average number of burglaries per. 10,000 inhabitants is approximately 42, which is far too high.
However, there are some municipalities that are far more vulnerable than others. Figures from Statistics Denmark show that the 10 hardest-hit municipalities actually account for 1/3 of the total number of burglaries.
It will probably not surprise many that the largest proportion of burglaries are committed in the larger cities, but this does not mean that the smaller municipalities are part of the burglary statistics. However, it is worth mentioning that 6 of the top 10 most burglary-affected municipalities are located north of Copenhagen.

Despite a lower number of burglaries in 2019, we Danes need to get better at securing our homes. That is the key to avoiding burglaries, believes Britt Wendelboe from Bo Trygt.
Burglary protection makes it more difficult for thieves
According to Britt Wendelboe from Bo Trygt, the low number of burglaries in private homes in 2019 is mainly due to the fact that Danes have become better at burglary-proofing their homes.
She tells Berlingske, among other things: " It helps to strengthen the house's resistance, i.e. windows and doors, so that it takes time and is noisy to get in. It also helps to install outdoor light sensors. Then the neighbors will notice it too ."
It therefore has a positive effect on burglary statistics to secure your home with, among other things, new locks, window locks, etc.

A large proportion of burglaries are committed through windows, so it is a good idea to install window locks to ensure your safety.
Know the thief's pattern
As a locksmith, you often need to put yourself in the shoes of a thief when you need to burglar-proof homes. This is necessary to be able to protect yourself as best as possible against long fingers.
Therefore, it is good to know the thief's pattern:
- Thieves often strike during the winter months and holiday periods.
- The thief either strikes at the beginning of a working day or in the early evening hours.
- The capital accounts for the largest share of burglaries
- Homes with higher property valuations have a higher risk of burglary
- 1/3 of burglaries in homes occur in the following month in another home in the immediate area.
- The thief travels an average of 41 km to the burglary address
- Burglary in apartments typically occurs on the ground floor.

Danish companies are also vulnerable to theft and burglary. Security systems such as fogging, DNA spray and the like are effective when the thief is already inside, but there are also a number of methods to keep the thief out. This can be, for example, by using electronic access control , where the company gains full control over who comes and goes - this makes it possible to monitor all traffic in the building. The system also makes it easy to adapt each employee's personal options and to take into account changes in personnel and the like, as changes can easily be made on a PC. The access control system can also be integrated with other security systems, so that a complete and comprehensive solution is achieved.

Fog protection ensures that when an alarm is triggered, the room is filled with a dense fog within seconds, making the thief's work impossible.
Burglary protection is your best weapon
Inadequate burglary protection is one of the main reasons why Danish homes rank at the very top of the European burglary statistics. Although the burglary rate is decreasing, it is still very high compared to the rest of Europe. Unfortunately, Denmark clearly ranks first in terms of the number of burglaries per capita. Therefore, the message is clear – get your home burglar-proof!
